L’une des grandes leçons que l’anthropologie nous a enseignée, c’est l’influence irrésistible sur l’humanité de la tradition et des coutumes tribales, des tabous et des superstitions hérités. La carapace est pratiquement incassable, sauf lors du choc d’une invasion ou de la pénétration d’une autre société. […] L’anthropologie administre son cordial déprimant à l'ultraconservateur et au radical révolutionnaire dans des proportions à peu près égales. Elle semble montrer que ces conglomérats hérités n’ont pratiquement aucune chance d’être vrais ni même sensés et, d’autre part, qu’aucune société ne peut exister sans eux ni même les soumettre à une correction sévère sans danger social.
